As of 30 June 2024, the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) has authorised 7.37 crore hospital admissions worth ₹1 lakh crore, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health. The scheme, implemented across 33 states and Union Territories, aims to provide health cover of ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation to about 55 crore beneficiaries.
Madhya Pradesh leads with 402.5 lakh Ayushman cards issued, followed by Maharashtra with 280 lakh, Karnataka with 171.5 lakh, Jammu and Kashmir with 85.9 lakh, Telangana with 82.5 lakh, Tamil Nadu with 73.6 lakh, and Meghalaya with 19.76 lakh.
Beneficiaries can create their Ayushman cards at any time through the Ayushman App or at the nearest Common Service Centre (CSC) or empanelled hospital. The scheme provides cashless and paperless healthcare services across more than 29,000 empanelled hospitals in the country, covering costs for treatment, medicines, diagnostic services, and more.
The top speciality treatments availed include general medicine, infectious diseases, general surgery, medical oncology, ophthalmology, and orthopaedics. The Health Benefit Package (HBP) covers 1,949 procedures across 27 medical specialties, including General Medicine, Surgery, and Cardiology.
In the 2024-25 Budget, the allocation for PMJAY has increased by 10 per cent to ₹7,300 crore from ₹6,800 crore in 2023-24. Overall, the Health Ministry’s budget has been raised by 12.96 per cent to ₹90,958.63 crore. The government has also announced customs duty exemptions on three cancer treatment drugs – Trastuzumab Deruxtecan, Osimertinib, and Durvalumab – to reduce treatment costs for cancer patients.
