The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are each set to engage in 20-hour discussions on the Union budget, which Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present on Tuesday.
The Lower House will have separate debates on the ministries of railways, education, health, MSME, and food processing, sources familiar with the development stated.
The business advisory committees (BAC) of both Houses, which include representatives from various parties, convened on Monday to finalize the session’s agenda.
The government retains the right to introduce new items as needed, with the Chair’s permission.
In Rajya Sabha, an eight-hour discussion on the appropriation and finance bills is anticipated, alongside a four-hour debate for each of four ministries, yet to be specified.
A Congress MP reported that his party called for short-duration discussions on issues like the Agnipath scheme and the NEET row during the Lok Sabha BAC meeting.
However, it was agreed that discussions related to various ministries would allow all parties to voice their concerns.
A government source indicated that the 20-hour slot for the general budget discussion will enable different parties to raise a range of issues, to which Sitharaman will respond.
Issues such as paper leaks, including those in the prestigious NEET, can be addressed during debates on the education ministry’s budget allocation, a source mentioned.
