Apple is poised to generate between 500,000 and 600,000 jobs in India over the next one to two years as local iPhone production continues to break export records each month, according to industry sources.
The tech giant currently employs around 200,000 people across its Indian supply chain, a workforce largely comprised of women. This includes employees of vendors and component suppliers.
The company’s strong performance is partly attributed to the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, which has helped drive iPhone exports to approximately $1 billion each month.
Tata Electronics, which operates two plants for Apple, has emerged as the largest job creator within the company’s Indian ecosystem, alongside other major suppliers like Foxconn and Pegatron.
Mobile manufacturing has been a significant contributor to job creation in India over the past decade as the government pushes to establish the country as a global manufacturing hub. Apple’s operations alone have created over 200,000 jobs, with more growth expected.
In preparation for the upcoming festival season, iPhone factories in India are set to hire more than 10,000 people directly. Apple is also reportedly in advanced discussions with Tata Group’s Titan Company and the Murugappa Group to assemble sub-components for iPhone camera modules, underscoring its commitment to expanding operations in India.
Apple plans to produce over 50 million iPhones annually in India as it shifts more production out of China. The company’s iPhone exports from India surged to $12.1 billion in 2023-24, up from $6.27 billion the previous year.
Overall, Apple’s operations in India reached a value of $23.5 billion in the last fiscal year, further solidifying the country’s position as a viable alternative to China and Vietnam in electronics manufacturing.
Meanwhile, Tata Group is preparing to launch a new iPhone assembly plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, expected to be operational during the festive quarter. The facility is anticipated to employ over 50,000 workers, primarily women.
In addition, Apple has started training thousands of workers at its Sriperumbudur factory in Tamil Nadu, operated by Foxconn, in preparation for the launch of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models in India following their global debut this autumn.
Apple plans to make its ‘Make in India’ iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models available in the country immediately after the global launch.
