The Assam Government has sealed a landmark agreement with the Tata Group, leasing over 170 acres of land in Jagiroad, Morigaon district, for a sprawling Rs 27,000-crore semiconductor plant.
The 60-year lease was finalised at the sub-registrar’s office, attended by Tata Group Board member Ranjan Bandopadhyay and Assam Industrial Development Corporation’s project in-charge, Dhiraj Pegu.
District Commissioner Devasish Sharma, accompanied by Tata officials Kaninika Thakur, Ashish Mishra, and Avinash Dhabade, hailed the occasion as pivotal for the state's development.
"This marks a significant milestone for Assam," remarked Sharma, speaking to reporters post-signing.
The plant, slated to occupy the former Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited site, is projected to generate over 30,000 jobs, with initial operations scheduled by mid-2025.
"The land transfer is complete, and Tata Group has indicated commencement of work shortly. We are thankful to them," added the DC.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the plant's foundation virtually on March 13, underscoring its strategic importance.
Tata Group plans to focus on wire bond, flip chip, and integrated systems packaging technologies, alongside advanced packaging innovations, catering to global demands in AI, industrial, and consumer electronics sectors.
