The Indian government is set to introduce the long-awaited 'INDIAsize' initiative to create standardised clothing measurements tailored to Indian body types, Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh announced on Thursday.
Currently, clothing brands in India rely on size standards from the US and UK, offering 'small', 'medium', and 'large' sizes that do not always accommodate Indian body proportions.
Differences in height, weight, and body part measurements between Western and Indian populations often result in ill-fitting garments.
The Ministry of Textiles approved the INDIAsize project to address these issues by developing standard body sizes for the Indian apparel industry.
"On IndiaSIZE, I'm trying to get the Prime Minister to inaugurate it, and it should be launched soon," Singh said at the launch of VisioNxt, India's first platform integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Emotional Intelligence (EI) for fashion trend forecasting.
VisioNxt aims to analyse geo-specific trends and reflect India’s cultural diversity, socio-economic nuances, and fashion preferences.
Singh noted that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of fostering India's leadership in fashion design forecasting.
“Earlier, America and Europe dominated fashion trend predictions, but under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, the Textiles Ministry, in collaboration with NIFT, has launched this historic initiative,” Singh said.
The move follows the Prime Minister’s address at the Global Textile Summit in 2017, where he highlighted the lack of India-specific real-time fashion insights.
The INDIAsize and VisioNxt initiatives aim to reduce reliance on global forecasting agencies while offering a deeper understanding of Indian fashion consumers.
By combining AI and human expertise, these platforms will help integrate the nation’s IT prowess with its textile industry, Singh added.
