India has successfully exported its first ready-to-drink fig juice, made from the GI-tagged Purandar Figs, to Poland, the Centre announced on Saturday. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the export, marking a significant milestone in promoting India's unique agricultural products globally.
In a statement, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said the fig juice was also showcased at ‘Macfrut 2024’ in Rimini, Italy, with support from APEDA, broadening its international presence. The event received positive feedback from buyers, notably from MG Sales SP in Wroclaw, Poland, which led to the landmark export.
“This achievement not only highlights the potential of Indian agro-products but also emphasises the importance of research and development in enhancing the value of agricultural exports,” the ministry stated.
The journey of this innovative fig juice began at the APEDA Pavilion during SIAL 2023 in Greater Noida, New Delhi. The international trade fair provided a platform for the product’s initial introduction to the global market, where it garnered significant attention and won an award, signalling its potential in the international arena.
The fig juice is produced by Purandar Highlands Farmers Producer Company Ltd., which has played a crucial role in its development. Since the first export of fresh GI-tagged Purandar Figs to Hamburg in 2022, APEDA has collaborated closely with smallholder farmers to bring this product to market. The fig juice, which has been granted a provisional patent, represents a significant innovation in the agricultural sector.
The government highlighted the importance of Farmers Producer Companies (FPCs) in promoting sustainable agricultural practices and exports, noting that this achievement reflects the vital role these organisations play in advancing Indian agro-products on the global stage.
