India will require around 100,000 company secretaries by 2030, driven by economic growth and a growing emphasis on good governance, according to the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI).
Currently, there are over 73,000 company secretaries in the country, with around 12,000 practising independently. These professionals are crucial in maintaining corporate governance and ensuring companies comply with various statutory requirements.
ICSI President B Narasimhan highlighted the evolving role of company secretaries, noting that they have become central to making India one of the world’s most attractive investment destinations. "India will need around 1 lakh company secretaries by 2030," Narasimhan told PTI.
The ICSI grants membership to over 2,500 individuals annually. The increasing demand for company secretaries is linked to projections that India is on track to become a USD 7 trillion economy by 2030. According to a finance ministry report from January, India’s economy could grow at a rate above 7 per cent in the coming years, supported by the financial sector and structural reforms.
To attract more young talent to the profession, ICSI has introduced direct registration for graduates and postgraduates into the company secretary executive programme. Additionally, the institute has implemented secretarial standards to ensure uniform practices across corporate boards.
