Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will visit Uzbekistan from September 24 to 28, where she will sign a bilateral investment treaty (BIT) aimed at enhancing economic cooperation between the two countries.
Her visit coincides with the ninth annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), where she will represent India as the Indian Governor to the bank, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement.
India, the second-largest shareholder in the AIIB, will engage in multilateral discussions during the meeting, focusing on global development issues. The AIIB, a multilateral development bank, is committed to promoting sustainable infrastructure investment across Asia.
Sitharaman is expected to hold bilateral meetings with her counterparts from Uzbekistan, Qatar, and China, as well as the AIIB President. She will also call on Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during her official engagements.
The signing of the BIT between India and Uzbekistan will be a key highlight of the visit, fostering long-term economic cooperation between the two nations. The treaty is expected to boost investments and strengthen economic ties.
Sitharaman will also participate in the India-Uzbekistan business forum, where industry leaders from both countries will discuss enhancing bilateral trade and investment opportunities. Additionally, she will visit the Samarkand State University and the Lal Bahadur Shastri Monument in Tashkent, and interact with the Indian diaspora in Uzbekistan, the ministry stated.
The AIIB annual meeting is expected to draw delegations from 80 countries, with a focus on developing sustainable infrastructure to support economic growth and improve connectivity across the region.
