Indian telecom companies are targeting to secure 10 per cent of all 6G patents and contribute one-sixth of global standards within the next three years, according to an official statement released on Saturday.

Industry players have proposed aligning research to meet ‘India’s needs’ and establishing a robust "Standards Community." This proposal was discussed during the second meeting of the Stakeholders Advisory Committee (SAC) on Telecom Service Providers, chaired by Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Friday.

The statement highlighted that during the meeting, industry leaders emphasised the need for a systematic approach to research, targeting a 10 per cent share of 6G patents and significant contributions to global standards over the next three years.

The SAC’s first meeting identified key focus areas, including international standards, India’s share in Intellectual Property and Standard Essential Patents (SEP), connectivity gaps, and telecom service quality.

"India has already launched initiatives like the Bhart6G Vision, Bhart6G Alliance, and an IPR support framework. With these in place, the country can aim for 10 per cent of all 6G patents and one-sixth of global contributions," the statement said, outlining a proposed three-year roadmap.

The SAC stressed the importance of India becoming a leader in deep-tech, expanding both wireline and intelligent wireless broadband networks, and ensuring reliable connectivity.

Minister Scindia urged SAC members to outline a clear path to achieve these goals and define the roles of various stakeholders, including the government. He also encouraged telecom service providers to take necessary steps to ensure high-quality telecom services for citizens.

The meeting was attended by industry leaders, including Reliance Jio Managing Director Pankaj Pawar, Vodafone Idea CEO Akshaya Moondra, BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Robert J Ravi, Tejas Networks’ Chairman N G Subramaniam, and COAI Director General S P Kochhar.

Telecom operators also called for a supportive policy framework to drive investment towards achieving 100 per cent broadband coverage across the country.
