IndiGo will soon introduce the gender-neutral honorific 'Mx' as an option for passengers booking tickets, part of the airline’s broader push for inclusivity.
The country’s largest carrier, which holds a 62 per cent share of the domestic market, also plans to double the number of employees with disabilities within its workforce.
Sukhjit S Pasricha, Group Chief Human Resources Officer at IndiGo, said the 'Mx' option will be available during the booking process, providing a choice for transgender passengers who prefer not to identify as male or female. Currently, only 'male' and 'female' options are offered.
Other Indian airlines, such as Air India Express and Vistara, already provide the 'Mx' honorific.
Pasricha noted that IndiGo has launched several initiatives to support the LGBTQ+ community, including employee referral programmes aimed at increasing LGBTQ+ representation within the airline. “We partner with agencies specialising in LGBTQ+ recruitment, which has helped create a more inclusive environment,” he said.
He also mentioned that LGBTQ+ individuals are being steadily integrated into various roles at IndiGo, including flying positions. The airline offers benefits such as coverage for gender reassignment surgery and medical insurance for live-in partners, which have made the company more attractive to candidates from the LGBTQ+ community.
As of 31 March 2024, IndiGo had 36,860 permanent employees, including 5,038 pilots and 9,363 cabin crew members. Pasricha said the airline employs over 240 individuals with disabilities across 60 cities, primarily in customer-facing roles.
“We prioritise merit-based hiring and have employed individuals with disabilities as customer service officers/executives in airport operations and cargo teams,” he added.
IndiGo aims to at least double the number of employees with disabilities in the next financial year.
