Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Austrian companies to invest in India, emphasising the substantial potential for bilateral collaborations across various sectors. The invitation was extended during a visit to Austria, marking the first by an Indian prime minister in over 40 years. Modi's visit follows a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi and Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer addressed a group of esteemed Austrian and Indian CEOs at a roundtable business meeting held at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna. The meeting underscored the growing interest and opportunities for collaboration between the two nations.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs highlighted Modi's focus on several key areas for potential investment and cooperation. These include infrastructure development, renewable energy projects, green technology sectors, and emerging technologies.

The prime minister also mentioned fintech, startups, and innovation as promising areas for bilateral partnerships. Modi's call for investment comes at a time when India is keen on fostering innovation and entrepreneurship through international cooperation.

In support of these objectives, the India-Austria Startup Bridge was launched in February 2024. This initiative aims to strengthen the startup ecosystems of both countries, providing a platform for budding entrepreneurs to collaborate and innovate. The bridge is expected to facilitate the exchange of ideas, resources, and expertise between Indian and Austrian startups.

The economic ties between India and Austria have shown significant growth. Indo-Austria bilateral trade for the year 2023 reached USD 2.93 billion. Indian exports to Austria amounted to USD 1.52 billion, while imports from Austria were valued at USD 1.41 billion. These figures reflect a balanced and dynamic trade relationship, with potential for further growth through enhanced cooperation in various sectors.

The Austrian business community has shown a keen interest in the Indian market, recognizing the opportunities presented by India's robust economic growth and expanding consumer base.

Sectors such as renewable energy, infrastructure, and technology are particularly attractive for Austrian investors, given India's focus on sustainable development and technological innovation.

Prime Minister Modi's visit and his call for investment have been well-received by Austrian businesses. The bilateral discussions and the launch of the India-Austria Startup Bridge are expected to pave the way for more substantial and strategic partnerships. These efforts aim to not only boost economic ties but also foster a deeper cultural and technological exchange between the two nations.

Prime Minister Modi's visit to Austria has opened new avenues for collaboration, inviting Austrian companies to be a part of India's growth story. The focus on infrastructure, energy, and emerging technologies reflects a forward-looking approach to bilateral relations, promising mutual benefits and a strengthened partnership in the years to come.
