Dominic Sangma's Garo-language film "Rapture" has won the Best Cinematography award at the 7th Malaysian International Film Festival (MIFF) held in Kuala Lumpur.
The accolade was presented to cinematographer Toxo Xavier, whose artistic vision has brought international recognition to this film from Meghalaya.
Set against the backdrop of the Garo community in Meghalaya, "Rapture" follows the harrowing tale of a ten-year-old boy afflicted by night blindness.
As children in his village begin to vanish amid chilling rumors of organ trafficking, the film captures the community's palpable fear.
The film's compelling narrative and stunning visuals have resonated with audiences globally, effectively showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of the Garo community.
Supported by notable entities such as Hubert Bals, Visions Sud Est, and the Doha Film Institute, "Rapture" is produced by Dominic Sangma's Anna Films in collaboration with Chinese producers Xu Jianshang and Sun Li, alongside Indian producers Anu Rangachar, Harsh Agarwal, Aditya Grover, and Stephen Zacharias. Local patron Eva Gunme R. Marak has also significantly contributed to the film’s production.
After a year of successful international screenings, "Rapture" is set for its highly anticipated homecoming release in Meghalaya, scheduled for August 15 in Tura, Garo Hills.
This screening marks a significant moment for the local community and underscores the growing recognition of Northeast Indian cinema on the global stage, blending local folklore with pressing contemporary issues.
