Tribal-State Jharkhand is set to witness history as a representative of the third gender prepares to enter the political arena by contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Dhanbad Lok Sabha constituency. Sunaina Singh, a determined advocate for her community, is poised to break barriers despite their minority status.
Having graduated with a degree in Zoology from Dhanbad’s P K Roy Memorial College, 35-year-old Sunaina Singh brings a unique perspective to her candidacy. She has secured a nomination from the Naqi Bhartiya Ekta Party (NBEP), based in Uttar Pradesh, adding further momentum to her campaign.
Notably, Sunaina currently serves as the district president of the 'Kinnar Maa Trust, showcasing her commitment to uplifting transgender individuals.
Initially considering an independent candidacy, Sunaina's decision to accept the NBEP ticket, under the leadership of Chaudhary Zarar Ahmed Naqi, underscores her strategic approach to the electoral process.
The third gender leader said that she would address pressing issues such as unemployment and education. She also aims to enhance educational opportunities, thereby fostering employment prospects in Dhanbad. Her manifesto emphasises the need for equal opportunities and highlights the persistent inequality faced by the transgender community.
Despite familial opposition, Sunaina is undeterred, drawing support from her community and middle-class families. Her resolve to combat nepotism and prioritize constituency welfare reflects her dedication to serving the people rather than personal interests.
Sunaina's journey, marked by abandonment at birth and subsequent care by the transgender community, underscores the resilience and challenges faced by marginalised individuals.
She said that despite facing discrimination in society, she is committed to improving the lives of her constituents by tackling poverty, corruption, crime, and unemployment.
As Sunaina is set to embark on her electoral journey, she envisions a future where education and employment opportunities flourish in Dhanbad, a vital commercial hub. With the support of her community and residents, she is ready to challenge the status quo and champion inclusivity in politics.
