A bus carrying polling officials and electronic voting machines caught fire in Madhya Pradesh's Betul district, damaging a few EVMs, according to a senior official.

However, Betul Collector Narendra Suryavanshi told PTI over the phone that no polling staff and the bus driver were injured in the incident.

He said the incident occurred near Gola village in the district around 11 pm on Tuesday.

The collector said the fire broke out because of a spark in the bus, but no one suffered any injuries in the incident.

He said the fire damaged the EVMs of four polling stations, including booth numbers 275, 276, 277, 278, 279, and 280.

He added that the fire tender doused the flames, which had totally gutted the bus.

Suryavanshi said six polling parties and as many EVMs were in the bus at the time of the incident, four of which were damaged, while two others were safe.

He said either a control or ballot unit suffered damage in the fire in the four affected EVMs.

When asked whether the incident would affect the vote count recorded in the EVMs, the collector said he would send his report to the Election Commission on the issue, and the poll body would decide whether to re-poll the affected booths.

A poll official said 72.65 per cent of polling was recorded in the Betul Lok Sabha seat.
