Young politicians in Uttar Pradesh are showcasing a health-conscious approach to their campaign routines, setting themselves apart from their older counterparts with unique dietary habits.
While senior politicians typically kickstart their days with a customary cup of hot tea, the younger candidates opt for alternative morning rituals. Some begin with hot water, while others favor turmeric-infused water, citing its purported benefits for throat health.
"I start with turmeric water, which takes care of throat infection, and then get a body massage which rejuvenates me," shared one youthful contender, detailing his morning routine.
His breakfast consists of a selection of nuts, saffron-infused milk, and fruits, followed by a lunch of homemade dal and sautéed vegetables, eschewing rotis and rice.
Coconut water accompanies him during campaign activities, emphasizing the importance of hydration amidst the scorching heat. He said that he had consulted a dietician to carefully create a diet chart.
Many candidates, observing the Navratri fast and managing health conditions like diabetes, opt for limited diets. "Since I fast during Navratri and I am also diabetic, I survive on coconut water and buttermilk," remarked one participant, abstaining from fruits.
However, approaches vary among seasoned politicians, with some preferring to "eat on the go."
One incumbent MP disclosed his practice of sharing hearty breakfasts with his team before relying on offers of food from constituents during campaign stops, fostering connections with voters through shared meals.
Another experienced politician highlighted the cultural significance of accepting meal invitations from supporters, enjoying dishes ranging from puri-sabzi to pulao. Roadside dhabas also serve as venues for both sustenance and campaigning, providing insights into rival campaigns.
To sustain energy throughout the day, some carry "dry food" like puffed rice, roasted grams, and sherbet for snacking during breaks or while traveling and campaigning in Uttar Pradesh.
