Gagan Narang to lead India's Olympic contingent in Paris

Four-time Olympian and 2012 Olympic Games men’s 10m Air Rifle bronze medalist Gagan Narang has been appointed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to replace Mary Kom as the Chef-de-Mission for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games, set to commence on July 26.

PV Sindhu Named Flag Bearer With Gagan Narang As Chef-de-Mission.

IOA President PT Usha expressed confidence in Narang's ability to lead the Indian contingent, highlighting his Olympic experience and medal achievement. Narang's selection comes after Mary Kom resigned from the role in April, citing personal challenges that made it difficult for her to fulfil the responsibilities.

"I was looking for an Olympic medalist to lead our contingent, and my young colleague is an apt replacement for Mary Kom," stated PT Usha in a press release announcing the decision.

In addition to Narang's appointment, PT Usha also announced that PV Sindhu, India’s two-time Olympic medalist in badminton, will be one of the female flag bearers at the Paris Olympics alongside table tennis star A. Sharath Kamal.

“I am delighted to announce PV Sindhu as the female flag-bearer alongside Sharath Kamal in the opening ceremony," Usha mentioned, emphasising Sindhu's remarkable achievements in Olympic sports.

Mary Kom, the boxing legend and a bronze medalist at the London Olympics, had initially accepted the role of Chef de Mission before stepping down due to personal reasons.

In her resignation letter to PT Usha, the Union Sports Ministry, and the Sports Authority of India, Mary Kom expressed regret but explained her decision was necessary given her family commitments.

"It is embarrassing for me to retreat from a pronounced commitment, which I seldom do, but I am left with no choice," Mary Kom wrote, acknowledging the honour of being chosen for the role.

The IOA had earlier appointed Mary Kom as the Chef de Mission for the Paris Olympics, with winter Olympian Shiva Keshavan named as her deputy. However, Mary Kom's decision to resign came as a surprise following weeks of preparation for the Games.

Reflecting on her tenure, Mary Kom expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her and expressed her readiness to serve the country in any capacity possible. Despite her initial willingness to take up the responsibility, she ultimately decided to prioritise her family obligations.

The IOA, in response to Mary Kom's resignation, acknowledged her decision and will proceed with Gagan Narang taking over the crucial role of Chef de Mission for India's contingent at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

PV Sindhu’s selection as a flag bearer alongside Sharath Kamal adds further anticipation and excitement to India’s representation at the prestigious sporting event.
