According to a police official, the arrest followed a report from reliable sources indicating that a secret document issued by Police Headquarters, containing security details, was being shared in WhatsApp groups managed by Tarun Behl, owner of The Sree Times, Aasman newspaper, and several educational institutions.

J&K newspaper owner booked under Official Secrets Act

Tarun Behl, who owns The Sree Times, Aasman newspaper, and several educational institutions, was taken into custody and booked under FIR number 80/2024 at the Channi Himmat Police Station.

The owner of a local newspaper, Tarun Behl, was arrested on Thursday under the Official Secrets Act (OSA) for allegedly circulating sensitive information in WhatsApp groups.

Behl, who owns The Sree Times, Aasman newspaper, and several educational institutions, was taken into custody and booked under FIR number 80/2024 at the Channi Himmat Police Station in Jammu.

He faces charges under Sections 3/5 of the Official Secrets Act 1923 and 49/353 BNS.

According to a police official, Behl’s arrest followed a report from reliable sources indicating that a secret document issued by Police Headquarters, containing security details, was being shared in WhatsApp groups managed by Behl.

The circulation of this document, which aimed to spread misinformation, led to Behl's arrest.

Behl, known for owning several luxurious cars and properties worth crores, was remanded to police custody for four days.

Police are investigating the matter and have urged media houses and WhatsApp group admins to avoid sharing information or documents that could jeopardise national security.

"Those acting irresponsibly will be dealt with according to the law," the police warned.

This is not the first time individuals in Jammu and Kashmir have been arrested under the OSA. In recent years, there have been several notable cases involving journalists.

In 2011, Iftikhar Gilani, a prominent journalist, was arrested under the OSA for allegedly possessing classified documents related to the security situation in Kashmir.

The charges were later dropped due to lack of evidence, but the case highlighted the sensitive nature of reporting in the region.

In another case in 2018, Asif Sultan, a journalist with the Kashmir Narrator magazine, was arrested under the OSA for allegedly harbouring terrorists and possessing sensitive documents. His arrest drew significant attention from international human rights organisations.

Additionally, in 2021, Fahad Shah, editor of The Kashmir Walla, was detained under the OSA for publishing reports deemed sensitive by authorities.

His detention sparked widespread protests from journalistic communities both within and outside Kashmir.
