Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal has been declared 'tankhaiya' - (a person guilty of religious misconduct) by Akal Takht on Friday for the 'mistakes' SAD committed when in government from 2007 to 2017 tenure.
After a meeting of five Sikh head priests, Gyani Raghbir Singh, the Jathedar of the Akal Takht, the highest Sikh temporal seat, said it was unanimously decided that Badal when he was deputy chief minister and SAD president, took decisions that affected the party and caused damage to Sikh interests.
Till the time Badal does not seek an apology for the mistakes he committed by appearing before the Akal Takht in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib, he is declared a 'tankhaiya', the Jathedar said.
The Jathedar of the Akal Takht further said that the ministers from the Sikh community, who served in the Akali cabinet between 2007 and 2017, shall also have to appear before the Akal Takht within a fortnight to provide a written explanation for their actions. This directive follows a meeting held at the Akal Takht secretariat.
Earlier, former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal sought "unconditional forgiveness" for any mistakes he had committed during his tenure in office. In his previous letter, Badal humbly referred to himself as a "servant" of the Guru, reaffirming his dedication towards Guru Granth Sahib and the Akal Takht.
Notably, former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal submitted his explanation on July 24, in response to the Akal Takht's summons.
