Since the start of the 10-day annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath shrine in the south Kashmir Himalayas, approximately 114.57 tonnes of waste have been gathered from the twin routes. This initiative is part of efforts to ensure an environmentally friendly journey.

The 52-day pilgrimage leads to the holy cave shrine located at an elevation of 3,880 meters. Starting on June 29th, the journey commences from two tracks: the 48-kilometer Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag and the shorter 14-kilometer but steeper Baltal route in Ganderbal.

"So far, the cumulative waste figure on both axes remained at 114.57 tonnes. The total quantity of waste processed in tonnes remained at 85.72 and total inert waste generated in tonnes remained at 27.43," an official said.

He mentioned that the combined efforts of waste management teams produced impressive outcomes in handling plastic, wet, and inert waste along the path.

The Directorate of Rural Sanitation, under the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj department, has implemented an innovative approach to sanitation management in a committed endeavour to ensure an eco-friendly yatra.

Over 7,000 sanitation workers have been deployed along the two routes since June 27 to maintain cleanliness and support a zero-landfill policy.

According to the official, the department has implemented a holistic approach, targeting men, machinery, mechanisms, maintenance, monitoring, and motivation to achieve sustainable sanitation.

This holistic approach ensures efficient waste management and promotes a cleaner environment for the thousands of pilgrims participating in the yatra, he added.

The official reported that 43.30 tonnes of plastic waste had been gathered, expertly compacted, and securely stored at assigned sites.

He mentioned that the collected plastic waste will be distributed to authorised recyclers to guarantee proper handling and minimise its environmental impact.

He further stated that the 43.85 tonnes of organic waste collected is undergoing processing in composting beds, adhering to best practices to create high-quality fertiliser.

The fertiliser will be provided to the agriculture department as a substitute for chemicals and fertilisers, promoting sustainable agricultural practices by producing valuable compost and supporting organic farming.

The official stated that 27.43 tonnes of inert waste had been generated.

Of this, 24 tonnes have been appropriately disposed of at the Srinagar Municipal Corporation's Achan dumping site.

In addition, three tonnes of inert waste have been loaded into compactors for further processing. The official emphasised that this methodical approach ensures effective management of inert waste, minimising its impact on the environment.
