Heavy rainfall in Jharkhand on Friday led to a flood-like situation in several low-lying areas, including the capital city Ranchi, where rainwater entered many homes, prompting NDRF teams to rescue residents to safer locations.
The Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for August 3, warning of potentially very heavy rainfall in areas such as Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, and Latehar districts.
In response to the MET Centre's warning, the State government issued an alert, instructing all deputy commissioners to take necessary precautions.
“The low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjacent Jharkhand is expected to move west-northwest and develop into a depression over Jharkhand and nearby areas within the next 24 hours,” said Abhishek Anand, Director of MET Centre, Ranchi. This has resulted in heavy showers across the state, affecting areas like Durgapur, Asansol, Pakur, Jamtara, Sahibganj, and Deoghar.
The MET Centre Ranchi advised residents to remain vigilant, stay indoors unless necessary, and avoid low-lying areas, water bodies, and trees. Farmers were specifically advised to seek shelter during thunderstorms and lightning.
The Disaster Management Department provided a helpline number, 0612-2294204, 205, and a toll-free number, 1070, for residents needing assistance.
NDRF personnel were seen rescuing people from waterlogged areas of Ranchi on Friday.
