Abhishek Banerjee, National General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), appeared before the Bidhannagar Sub-Divisional Court on Wednesday in connection with an ongoing investigation into controversial remarks made during an election campaign. The appearance was to facilitate the collection of his voice sample in the presence of a magistrate, as directed by the court.
The case, currently under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), stems from statements made by Banerjee at a political rally, where his remarks involving DJs drew criticism for being provocative. Investigators had sought the voice sample to aid their probe, a request that was earlier approved by the court.
TMC MP Banerjee’s appearance comes after he skipped two prior summons issued by the Bidhannagar court. He failed to appear on June 30 and again on July 8, prompting concern from the investigating agency and drawing judicial scrutiny. During a subsequent hearing on July 10, the Calcutta High Court issued a stern warning, cautioning that continued non-cooperation could lead to the withdrawal of legal protection granted to him. Following the court’s warning, Banerjee’s counsel assured the court that he would comply with the directive and appear before the magistrate.
On Wednesday, he arrived at the court premises around noon as promised. Security around the court complex was significantly tightened ahead of his visit. Personnel from central forces, along with state police, were deployed in large numbers to maintain law and order. Entry into the court premises was strictly regulated, with only individuals having valid reasons being allowed inside. Surveillance was heightened to prevent any untoward incidents, particularly amid concerns raised by the defence about the possibility of objects such as eggs being hurled at the MP.
