In a move aimed at improving the tracing and recovery of missing individuals, the Jharkhand Police has decided to create dedicated monitoring teams in every district to oversee investigations into cases involving missing and abducted children as well as adults.
The initiative has been launched following directions from the Director General of Police (DGP) Tadasa Mishra. Police Headquarters has instructed all Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) to constitute the district-level teams without delay and report compliance.
Once formed, the teams will be responsible for maintaining comprehensive data on missing persons, reviewing the status of ongoing investigations, coordinating with various agencies, accelerating recovery efforts and ensuring that progress reports are submitted to courts whenever necessary.

Police officials said the decision has been prompted by the rising number of missing persons cases in Jharkhand, particularly those involving children. Investigations have found that several such incidents are connected to human trafficking, child labour and other organised crimes, underscoring the need for faster and more coordinated action.
Emphasising the importance of the initiative, the DGP has directed all district police units to treat the tracing of missing persons as a priority. The monitoring teams will submit periodic reports to Police Headquarters, allowing senior officers to keep track of investigations and review progress at the state level.
The district monitoring units are expected to become functional across Jharkhand soon after they are constituted by the respective SSPs and SPs, strengthening the state's mechanism for locating missing persons and ensuring greater accountability in investigations.
