In a bid to enhance passenger amenities and promote wellness among travelers, the Indian Railways has announced plans to establish over 100 Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs) at various railway stations across the country.
These centers, operating under licensees, aim to provide affordable access to quality medicines and consumables to millions of daily visitors and passengers.
The initiative, which was conceptualized in August 2023, gained momentum with the identification of 50 stations for the pilot project.
A senior railway official stated, "It has been decided to allocate an additional 61 PMBJKs at locations across the country with pre-fabrication structures at an individual cost of Rs 12.53 lakh."
The PMBJKs are set to be positioned strategically within circulating areas and concourses of railway stations, ensuring convenient access for both incoming and outgoing passengers.
The railway official added, "It also enhances wellness and welfare among all sections of society by providing medicines at affordable prices, creating employment opportunities, and generating avenues for entrepreneurs to open PMBJKs."
The procurement process for stalls is conducted through e-auctioning with respective railway divisions.
