Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s wife and JMM candidate for Gandey Assembly bypoll Kalpana Soren Murmu registered a win in the bye-election.
Kalpana won the by-election by a margin of 26,484 votes.
Kalpana defeated BJP’s Dilip Kumar Verma in the bye-election, which was necessitated after the resignation of Gandey legislator Sarfaraj Ahmed.
Later Sarfaraj Ahmed was nominated to contest the Rajya Sabha elections, which he won comfortably.
Notably, there was a tough contest between Kalpana Soren and Dilip Verma in the Kurmi-dominated area. When the counting of votes started, BJP candidate Dilip Verma was leading in the first and second rounds, but later Kalpana Soren started taking the lead and won the contest.
During the entire Lok Sabha elections, Kalpana emerged as one of the biggest star campaigners of the INDI Alliance.
She was one of the prominent faces of the alliance and took part in over 300 election rallies including the grand rallies of Mumbai, Delhi and Ranchi.
It is being said that Kalpana will be the new Chief Minister of Jharkhand given her popularity and public reach.
The JMM is likely to form a new government in her leadership this month as she is leading the party from the front ever since ED has arrested her husband in a land scam case.
