Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday praised Vice President Kamala Harris, stating that she has the "character, experience, and vision" to lead the United States, as she addressed thousands of Democratic Party leaders and members from across the country to nominate Harris as their candidate for the upcoming presidential election in November.
“Kamala has the character, experience, and vision to lead us forward,” said Clinton, 76, who lost to Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, during her speech at the Democratic National Convention.
Clinton, who was also First Lady and a U.S. senator, highlighted her personal connection with Harris, recalling their shared background as young lawyers dedicated to helping abused or neglected children.
“I know her heart and her integrity. We both got our start as young lawyers helping children who were abused or neglected. That kind of work changes you. Those kids stay with you. Kamala carries with her the hopes of every child she protected, every family she helped, every community she served,”she said.
Describing Harris as the "future of the United States," Clinton expressed confidence in her ability to lead the nation, particularly in addressing key issues such as lowering costs for working families, creating good-paying jobs, and restoring abortion rights nationwide.
“So as president, she will always have our backs. She will fight to lower costs for hard-working families. Open the doors wide for good paying jobs. And, yes, she will restore abortion rights nationwide,” Clinton said.
Clinton also urged Americans to recognise the significance of the upcoming election, framing it as a choice between progress and regression. “There is always a choice. Do we push forward or pull back? Come together as ‘we the people’ or split into us versus them? That’s the choice we face in this election,” she said, calling on voters to elect Harris as the next president.
Applauding President Joe Biden for his "lifetime of service and leadership," Clinton contrasted Harris’s commitment to the nation with former President Donald Trump’s focus on himself. “Just look at the candidates. Kamala cares about kids, families, and America. Donald only cares about himself,” Clinton remarked.
“On her first day in court, Kamala said five words that guide her still: ‘Kamala Harris, for the people.’ That’s something Donald Trump will never understand.”
Clinton’s endorsement comes ahead of Harris’s formal acceptance speech on Thursday, where the 59-year-old will officially accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for president.
Harris's nomination follows President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race for the White House last month and endorse her candidacy. Harris has also secured endorsements from former President Barack Obama and sufficient delegate votes to confirm her as the party’s nominee.
Harris's nomination marks a historic moment as she becomes the first woman of colour and the first Indian-American to lead a major American political party’s presidential ticket.
