Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav announced on Tuesday that he will be resigning from the Karhal Assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh. This decision comes as he currently holds two seats, having also won the Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency.
Akhilesh Yadav secured the Karhal assembly seat in the 2022 UP assembly elections. He mentioned in a press conference that he has communicated with the workers of Karhal and Mainpuri about his decision.
"I have met the workers of Karhal and Mainpuri and told them that as I have won the elections from 2 seats, I have to leave a seat. So I will inform you about leaving the seat of Vidhan Sabha soon," Akhilesh Yadav said.
By resigning from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Akhilesh Yadav will no longer hold the position of Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly. When asked about his successor as the Leader of the Opposition, he stated, "The decision will be taken by the party in a way that is beneficial for the party and increases the party’s vote share."
The Samajwadi Party has decided that Akhilesh Yadav will be the party’s leader in the Lok Sabha. The SP performed strongly in the recent Lok Sabha elections, winning 37 out of the 80 seats available. Akhilesh Yadav himself won the Kannauj seat, defeating the BJP candidate Subrat Pathak by a margin of over 170,922 votes.
In the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party won 37 seats, while the BJP secured 33. The Congress party managed to win 6 seats, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) won 2, and both Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) and Apna Dal (Soneylal) won 1 seat each.
Akhilesh Yadav's resignation from the Karhal seat marks a significant development in the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh. His focus will now be on his role in the Lok Sabha, and the party will work on selecting a new Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly.
This move is expected to impact the party's strategy and leadership dynamics in the region.
