Government And opposition Meet To Discuss Bangladesh Unrest.

Amid escalating unrest in Bangladesh, the central government has called for an all-party meeting on Tuesday to discuss the situation. The meeting, scheduled to commence at around 10 am, will feature a briefing by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, providing an overview of the developments in Bangladesh.

On Monday, the violence in Bangladesh reached a critical point with at least 135 people killed during clashes involving police firings, mob beatings, and arson, according to Dhaka Tribune. The unrest saw significant casualties and injuries, with the country reporting that the clashes between demonstrators and members of the ruling Awami League resulted in the deaths of at least 96 individuals due to police shootings.

The violence extended to the outskirts of the capital, where 18 people were killed in the Savar and Dhamrai regions. Prothom Alo reported that 500 people were treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for various injuries, including gunshot wounds, with 70 admitted for further care. The situation intensified after news broke that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had left the country, leading to widespread celebrations on the streets.

Sheikh Hasina, amid growing protests, resigned from her position and arrived at the Hindon Air Base near New Delhi on Monday evening, travelling in a C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft. Her departure triggered further chaos as people stormed Ganabhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister. Reports from Prothom Alo indicated that individuals were seen looting items from public buildings, including the Parliament.

The protests, initially driven by students demanding the abolition of a quota system for government jobs, evolved into a larger movement against Hasina and her Awami League party. The weekend's violence was particularly severe, with at least 95 people, including 14 police officers, killed and hundreds injured in Dhaka.

The central government’s decision to convene an all-party meeting underscores the gravity of the situation in Bangladesh. By bringing together various political factions, the government aims to present a united front and develop a coherent response to the crisis. The involvement of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is crucial, as he will provide an in-depth analysis of the unfolding events and their implications for India and the broader region.

As the unrest continues to grip Bangladesh, the central government’s approach to the crisis will be closely watched. The outcome of the all-party meeting and the subsequent actions taken by the government will be critical in determining how India navigates this complex situation.

The focus will be on ensuring stability and supporting any efforts to restore peace in Bangladesh, recognizing the significant historical and cultural ties between the two countries.

The situation remains fluid, and the central government’s efforts to manage the crisis through diplomatic and political channels will be pivotal in addressing the immediate concerns while planning for long-term stability in the region.

The all-party meeting is a significant step in this direction, aiming to harness collective wisdom and formulate an effective strategy to support Bangladesh during this turbulent period.
