India has urged Canada to take decisive action against anti-India elements operating from its territory.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made this call on Thursday, highlighting the discrepancy in how Canada addresses threats against its own leaders versus threats against Indian leaders and diplomats.
Jaiswal's comments followed reports that Canada had charged two individuals for threatening to kill Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on social media, yet similar threats against Indian figures have not seen comparable action.
"We have seen these reports. When a democracy adopts different yardsticks to measure or implement the rule of law and freedom of expression, it only exposes its own double standard," Jaiswal stated.
He emphasised that India expects Canada to address threats against Indian leaders, institutions, airlines, and diplomats with the same rigor it applies to threats against its own officials.
"We would like to see strong action, the same level of action on threats against us," Jaiswal added.
