A man's offensive comment about Smriti Singh, the widow of Kirti Chakra awardee Captain Anshuman Singh, has caused an uproar on social media, with many users demanding action against him.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also acknowledged the comment and has written to the Delhi Police, urging immediate and appropriate action against the individual.

The comment was made on a photo of Mrs Singh at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where she received the award on behalf of her late husband, who died while trying to save his colleagues at an Indian Army camp in the Siachen glacier.

Captain Singh was serving with the 26 Punjab Regiment as a medical officer at the time of his death.

He was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, and President Droupadi Murmu presented his wife, Smriti, and his mother with the honour.

While many users posted emotional tributes to the soldier, one user posted a disrespectful comment, which the NCW described as "lewd" in its letter to Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora.

The NCW identified a man named Ahmad K. from Delhi as the person who commented. This behaviour violates “Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000,” the women's panel said on X.

The NCW condemned this behaviour and urged the police to take immediate action. Additionally, it has also requested that the police arrest Ahmad K. and submit a detailed report within three days.

Many people tagged the NCW on social media, demanding strict action against the man and others who shared screenshots of the comment.

On the night of July 19, 2023, a short circuit caused a fire in an Indian Army ammunition dump at the camp where Captain Singh was posted.

He saw a fibreglass hut engulfed in flames and acted quickly to save those trapped inside, successfully rescuing four to five individuals.

However, the fire spread to a nearby medical investigation room. Captain Singh went back into the blazing structure but was unable to escape and died inside.

He was cremated with full state honours in Bhagalpur in Uttar Pradesh's Deoria district on July 22, 2023.
