Former sarpanch Aijaz Ahmed Sheikh was killed in Shopian’s Heerapora and a couple from Jaipur were injured in an attack in Anantnag’s Pahalgam late on Saturday night even as Kashmir is set for Lok Sabha elections in Baramulla and Anantnag-Rajouri consituencies on May 20 and 25, respectively.
Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh, who was a BJP member, died in hospital after terrorists fired at him in Heerapora village in Shopian district at 10.30 pm.
The couple from Rajasthan was injured in a separate incident in Anantnag.
Sheikh was moved to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Tourists Tabriz and his wife Farha were also injured when terrorists fired at them in the Yannar area of Anantnag district.
Kashmir Zone Police tweeted on X, "Terrorists fired upon and injured a lady, Farha, a resident of Jaipur, and her spouse, Tabrez, at Yannar, Anantnag. The injured were evacuated to the hospital for treatment. The area was cordoned off."
Baramulla will vote on May 20 in the fifth round of polls and Anantnag-Rajouri constituency on May 25.
The BJP, National Conference and People’s Democratic Party have condemned the incident.
