Haryana MLA Kiran Choudhry on Tuesday resigned from the Vidhan Sabha and might get a ticket for Rajya Sabha bypolls, representing Bharatiya Janata Party. Her resignation was accepted by the assembly speaker.
The bypoll for the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Haryana, necessitated by Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda's election to the Lok Sabha, is scheduled for September 3.
BJP, with 41 members in the 90-member assembly, is poised to win the seat.
Choudhry, who joined the BJP in June, is expected to be fielded by the party for the Rajya Sabha seat. The last day for filing nominations is Wednesday, with the withdrawal of nominations by August 27.
Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda had earlier said that his party would not field a candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat as it did not have the numbers.
After JJP leader Dushyant Chautala recently told Hooda that the Congress must name a candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat, the leader of the opposition had said that the former deputy chief minister should first see how many MLAs were with him.
Chautala had said that if Hooda was not conspiring with the BJP then his party should field a candidate in the Rajya Sabha bypoll.
"We have already promised to vote against the BJP," the JJP leader had said.
