India secured its first medal at the ongoing BRICS Games in Kazan, as the women’s table tennis team, consisting of Poymantee Baisya, Moumita Dutta, and Yashini Sivasankar, clinched a bronze medal.
In the semi-final, the Indian team faced a strong Chinese side, ultimately falling 1-3. Yashini Sivasankar provided a promising start, winning the first game 11-7, 4-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-2.
However, China rallied to take the remaining three rubbers, advancing to the final and leaving India to settle for bronze.
Newly-appointed Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya extended his congratulations to the women’s table tennis team.
"Heartiest congratulations to Women's #TableTennis team for winning the Bronze Medal at #BRICS Games. This is our first medal at the event. You have made the nation proud! I wish you continued success and glory in all your future endeavors," he posted on his official X handle.
Meanwhile, the Indian men’s table tennis team, comprising Anirban Ghosh, Jeet Chandra, and Snehit Suravajjula, finished in fifth place after a 3-1 victory over Bahrain in their classification match.
