The Union Ministry of Finance has sanctioned ₹2,000 crore for the second phase of the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP), an ambitious initiative aimed at bolstering the state’s roads and logistics infrastructure.

The project, also known as the Meghalaya Economic Growth Accelerator (MEGA) Corridor, is envisioned as a transformative step towards regional development.

The first phase of the MITP, funded with ₹880 crore from the World Bank, saw the successful implementation of crucial road projects, setting the stage for this expanded effort.

In this phase, over 300 km of double-lane roads will be developed, connecting key regions such as Shillong, Tura, Jowai, and Dawki.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma had earlier met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to propose the project and seek financial support, resulting in the significant approval.

The project will prioritize urban roads linking New Shillong Administrative City and New Shillong Knowledge City, along with the development of industrial parks, warehouses, agro-processing centers, and markets.

This infrastructure upgrade aims to turn Meghalaya into a hub of regional growth, fostering economic activities even in the state’s remote areas.

In a statement, the Commissioner and Secretary of the Planning, Investment Promotion & Sustainable Development Department emphasized the project’s role in boosting economic development through improved connectivity.

Chief Minister Sangma expressed his gratitude on social media, thanking Finance Minister Sitharaman for her support in advancing the MITP’s second phase, building on the successes of the first phase.
