In response to last year’s tragic death of a first-year student, Jadavpur University has initiated significant changes by establishing two new hostels on its main campus specifically for first-year undergraduate students.
This move aims to prevent similar incidents of ragging and abuse.
An official confirmed that one of the hostels, with a capacity of 70 beds, has already opened its doors, with students beginning to move in.
The second hostel, which will accommodate 50 students, is expected to be operational shortly.
The tragic incident occurred on August 10 of the previous year, when a first-year Bengali student fell from the balcony of the men's hostel following alleged ragging that included sexual abuse.
This incident led to the arrest of 13 individuals.
To enhance the safety and well-being of new students, the university has decided to segregate first-year students from their seniors. Second-year and third-year students will now reside in the men's hostel located off-campus.
This proactive measure is part of the university's broader efforts to foster a safer and more supportive environment for its incoming students, ensuring their security and well-being during their initial year of study.
