Five cyber criminals from the Jamtara district of Jharkhand, who were notorious after a popular Netflix series was made on their lives were today 5-year-
Rigorous Imprisonment by a Ranchi PMLA Court.
The special court of Ranchi PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) sentenced the five cyber criminals Ganesh Mandal, his son Pradeep Mandal, Santosh
Mandal, his son Pintu Mandal and Ankush Kumar Mandal to five years of rigorous imprisonment.
The criminals had cheated several people across the country of crores of rupees by posing as bank officials.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2.50 lakh each on all the convicts. The court has said in its order that if the fine amount is not deposited, the convicts will have to serve additional sentences.
The court had convicted Ganesh Mandal, his son Pradeep Mandal, Santosh Mandal, his son Pintu Mandal and Ankush Kumar Mandal on July 20.
All the convicts were proven guilty of taking SIM cards from fake addresses and committing cyber crimes by calling people posing as bank officials. ED presented a total of 24 witnesses in the court during the trial of this case. Special Public Prosecutor Atish Kumar argued in this case on behalf of ED.
The ED had filed a chargesheet in a special PMLA court in Ranchi in May 2019, and charges have been framed against all the accused, with the trial currently ongoing.
The ED took up the investigation of the cyber fraud cases in the year 2018 at the request of the Jharkhand Police. The convicts were charged with siphoning off huge amounts of money from several high people’s accounts through cyber fraud. One of the accused even siphoned off Rs 5 lakh from Bollywood
superstar Amitabh Bachchan’s account.
The convicts had also built palatial houses from the ill-gotten money in Jamtara, which were seized by the ED.
