On Friday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to visit the landslide-affected Wayanad was a positive step. He expressed his confidence that once the prime minister witnesses the extent of the devastation in person, he will declare it a national disaster.
Modi is scheduled to visit Wayanad district in Kerala on Saturday to assess the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts and to engage with survivors.
According to officials, Modi will arrive in Kannur around 11 am and then proceed to conduct an aerial survey of the areas in Wayanad that have been impacted by landslides.
"Thank you, Modi ji, for visiting Wayanad to personally take stock of the terrible tragedy. This is a good decision," Gandhi said in a post on X.
"I am confident that once the Prime Minister sees the extent of the devastation firsthand, he will declare it a national disaster," the former Congress chief said.
Modi will be updated on the progress of the rescue operations during his visit.
He will also meet with survivors of the landslides at relief camps and hospitals, according to officials.
Modi is scheduled to lead a review meeting to receive detailed briefings on the incidents and ongoing relief efforts.
After the landslides on July 30, which may be one of the worst natural disasters in Kerala, at least 226 people have died and many remain missing.
Gandhi, who represented Wayanad in the previous Lok Sabha, is a member of Parliament from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh.
