A speeding UPSRTC bus killed three students riding bicycles on the spot on the Kanpur-Sagar highway in the Patara area of Ghatampur on Friday morning.
The students were between 22 to 24 years of age.
Several passengers were also injured when the bus fell into a roadside ditch after crushing the students. Police and relief services are present on the spot and rescue operation is underway.
According to preliminary reports, all three Polytechnic students riding bicycles were on their way to the station to catch a train to reach their college in Hamirpur.
Among the deceased are Ankush Prajapati, Deepak Tiwari, and Manish Kumar, whose identification has been done through their identity cards.
Upon receiving the information about the accident, the police took the students to the CHC (Community Health Center), where doctors declared all three students dead. Angered by the incident, the villagers started a protest.
ACP Ghatampur Ranjit Kumar said, "The UPSRTC bus was heading toward Ghatampur from Kanpur when the accident occurred. The three deceased were students of a polytechnic college located in Hamirpur. Every day, they would park their bicycles at the station and take a train to reach their college."
The police pulled the bus from the ditch with the help of a crane. The police have taken all three bodies in custody and sent them for postmortem.
