The Government of Tamil Nadu, under Chief Minister MK Stalin, is planning to build a world-class cricket stadium in Coimbatore.
The aim is to would surpass the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, currently the largest cricket stadium in the world with a seating capacity of 132,000.
The proposed stadium aims to become the largest in the country, marking a significant addition to Tamil Nadu's sports infrastructure.
The state’s Sports Department has issued tenders for a detailed project report on the stadium’s construction, with bids expected to be submitted within a month.
The new stadium will feature modern amenities such as cafeterias, restaurants, viewing galleries, and a cricket museum for the public.
Additionally, it will include a specialist indoor fielding zone and a high-performance center for players.
The proposed location for the stadium is 16 kilometers outside Coimbatore city on NH 544, which connects Salem in Tamil Nadu to Kochi in Kerala.
This development aligns with a promise made by CM Stalin in April during the Lok Sabha elections, where he committed to establishing a state-of-the-art cricket stadium in Coimbatore.
Once completed, this stadium will serve as an alternative to Chennai's iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium, also known as Chepauk, which has been a historic cricket venue since 1916 and is the second oldest cricket stadium in India after Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.
