One of the gates of the Tungabhadra Dam in Karnataka was washed away last night after a chain link snapped. The State Disaster Management Authority of Andhra Pradesh (APSDMA) has issued an alert for residents living along the Krishna River banks, advising them to remain vigilant.
According to APSDMA managing director R. Kurmanadh, nearly 35,000 cusecs of floodwater flowed from the dam, with a total discharge expected to reach 48,000 cusecs downstream.
He urged caution among residents in Kurnool district, particularly in Kosiri, Mantralayam, Nandavaram, and Kouthalam.
This incident marks the first major issue at the dam in 70 years. Officials noted that restoration efforts can only begin after releasing approximately 60 tmc feet of water from the dam.
The Tungabhadra Dam features a total of 33 gates, and further assessments are underway to evaluate the full extent of the damage.
