Google Maps has introduced offline functionality for Wear OS-powered smartwatches, allowing users to access map data without an internet connection.
The update, now available in the public beta version, enables users to store map data directly on their smartwatches. After updating the Google Maps app, users will see a banner that reads, "Offline maps on the phone are auto-downloaded to the watch." A new "Offline maps" page has also been added to the main menu.
The feature automatically syncs maps for the user's local area and any offline maps saved on their phone. It shows the space occupied by the maps and offers an option to delete them. Maps are updated automatically when the watch is connected to Wi-Fi and charging.
When offline, a slashed cloud icon will appear next to the time on the map view. The update also introduces a new “Search & go” tile on Home and Work shortcuts and includes voice input via the microphone. Users can quickly access the map view with a single tap and manage downloaded maps through the new “Offline maps” button, which directs to the phone for further management.
This update is part of Google Maps version 11.140.0701.W for Wear OS and is available on the Pixel Watch 2.
