During a meeting with economists, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the importance of focusing on creating jobs, boosting manufacturing, and supporting rural businesses.
With less than two weeks until the Union Budget 2024-25 presentation on July 23, the Prime Minister also discussed the complexities of Centre-state relations, particularly related to funding programs and the accountability of states in their implementation.
The meeting took place at the NITI Aayog office and was attended by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Principal Secretary PK Mishra.
Nearly 20 economists and specialists, including Arvind Virmani, Surjit Bhalla, Amita Batra, Prachi Mishra, S Mahendra Dev and Ashok Gulati, delivered five-minute speeches. NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery and NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam were also in attendance.
Later in the evening, Prime Minister Modi posted on X: “Earlier today, interacted with eminent economists and heard their insightful views on issues pertaining to furthering growth.”
The economists and the Prime Minister discussed taxation rates extensively.
The primary focus was on achieving developed nation status by 2047 and increasing job opportunities. The discussions mainly centred on the actions that could be implemented in the manufacturing, agriculture, and rural sectors to work towards this objective.
