All India Secretaries' Conference on Water Vision @ 2047 - Way Ahead


The two-day 'All India Secretaries' Conference on Water Vision @ 2047 - Way Ahead’ concluded yesterday in Mahabalipuram, Chennai, with a resounding call to fortify the nation's water security.

 

Attended by representatives from 32 states and Union Territories, 30 secretaries, and over 300 delegates, the conference served as a platform to exchange best practices and discuss action plans based on the recommendations of the "1st All India Annual State Ministers Conference on Water" held in January 2023 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

 

The Ministry of Jal Shakti stated, The 22 recommendations from the previous conference emphasized key areas such as prioritizing drinking water accessibility and sustainability, bolstering climate resilience, enhancing both demand and supply-side management, modernizing water storage infrastructure, deploying cutting-edge technology, improving water usage efficiency, intensifying conservation efforts, promoting river interlinking, monitoring river health, implementing flood management measures, and fostering community engagement.

 

This recent conference aimed to expedite the implementation of these recommendations. The conference was structured around five thematic sessions focusing on different aspects of water management.

 

The first day featured discussions on Climate Resilience & River Health, Water Governance, and a Ministerial Session chaired by the Minister of Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Emphasizing the critical need for collaboration and innovation in sustainable water management, the Minister emphasized upon the importance of strengthening partnerships between the Centre and States to achieve water security goals.

 

The second day of the conference delved into three thematic sessions: 'Water Use Efficiency,' 'Water Storage & Management,' and 'People’s Participation /Jan Bhagidari.' These sessions aimed to explore strategies for optimizing water usage, improving storage infrastructure, and enhancing community involvement in water conservation initiatives.

 

Addressing the conference's conclusion, the Action Group of Secretaries proposed a roadmap to advance the agenda of Water Vision @ 2047. This roadmap is expected to guide future actions towards achieving water security and sustainability goals in India, the Ministry asserted.
