The Gujarat government will install solar rooftop systems with a combined capacity of 48 MW on various government buildings this financial year, allocating Rs 177 crore for the project.
The state’s Climate Change Department is driving the initiative to tap into Gujarat’s solar energy potential, with systems being actively installed on government properties.
"By March 2024, a total of 3,023 solar rooftop systems, generating 56.8 MW, will have been set up across various government departments in the state," the government said in a statement on Sunday.
To further advance this initiative, the state government will install a 48 MW solar rooftop system on buildings across Gujarat this year, supported by Rs 177.4 crore in funding.
In the 2023-24 period, Gujarat produced 24,765.3 million units (MU) of renewable energy, including 9,637 MU from solar, 14,201 MU from wind, 885.325 MU from hydro, 69 MU from small hydro, and 42 MU from biomass and bagasse.
Gujarat has effectively utilised its vast solar potential through the development of solar parks and the deployment of rooftop solar systems for households. Projects like Charanka Solar Park have helped position Gujarat as a leader in solar energy generation in India.
The state’s coastal wind farms have also played a key role in boosting its renewable energy capacity, the government added.
