Asia Pacific E-Commerce Policy Summit: Fostering Collaborative Dialogue for Regional Integration & Innovation.

The Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), in partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP), is set to host the inaugural Asia Pacific E-Commerce Policy Summit.

The event, scheduled for March 14, 2024, at the India Habitat Centre in Delhi, aims to foster collaborative dialogue aimed at shaping policy frameworks conducive to cross-border e-commerce and enhancing MSMEs' access to global value chains.

The APAC region, encompassing over 50 nations, has demonstrated robust economic growth, recording a substantial 4.6% surge in 2023, surpassing the global average of 3%. Projections indicate a further 4.2% increase in 2024, outpacing the global rate of 2.9%.

Key players in the e-commerce landscape including Japan, South Korea, India, and Indonesia collectively contributed 62.4% of global revenue in 2023, highlighting the region's significance in the global market.

The summit presents a crucial platform for these nations to collaborate, fostering regional integration, innovation, and sustainable economic development.

The summit's agenda encompasses four panel discussions, addressing pivotal facets of the e-commerce sector, alongside presentations from UN-ESCAP and interactive Q&A sessions.

The summit will feature several sessions covering crucial aspects of the e-commerce sector.

One session will focus on establishing a strong framework for cross-border e-commerce, with a particular emphasis on facilitating the empowerment of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through consultative policymaking. This session will also highlight the importance of implementing such policies across diverse geographical regions to ensure effectiveness.

Another session will delve into the complexities of consumer protection in the era of e-commerce. It will address the challenges of ensuring consumer rights and interests in the dynamic landscape of multichannel retail. The discussion will advocate for a balanced strategy that benefits both market players and consumers.

Furthermore, there will be a session dedicated to exploring the role of robust data governance frameworks in governing cross-border data flows within the e-commerce trade. This discussion will delve into the importance of establishing effective mechanisms to regulate and facilitate data transfers across borders, ensuring the smooth operation of e-commerce activities.

Lastly, the summit will examine the transformative influence of social media on e-commerce. This session will analyze how social media influencers shape policy narratives and engage with e-commerce platforms, shedding light on the evolving dynamics of policy engagement within the influencer paradigm.

Additionally, emerging payment technologies and other pertinent issues will be discussed. The summit will convene over 70 policymakers, industry CEOs, senior executives, academics, and legal experts from across APAC countries.

Distinguished speakers slated to address the summit include H.E. Mrs. C.A. Chaminda I. Colonne, Sri Lankan Ambassador to Thailand and Permanent Representative to ESCAP; H.E. Mrs. Chea Ratha, Secretary of State, Ministry of Commerce, Royal Government of Cambodia; Ms. Prewprae Chumrum, Chair, ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement Negotiations; Dr. Mikiko Tanaka, Director, UN-ESCAP; Dr. Donghyun Park, Economic Advisor (Strategic Knowledge Initiatives), Asian Development Bank (ADB); Mr. Pramod Bhasin, Chairman, ICRIER; Mr. Rama Subramaniam Gandhi, Former Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India; Mr. Mahendra Nerurkar, VP & CEO, Amazon Pay India; Dr. Archana Goyal Gulati, Former Head of Public Policy, Google India; and Mr. Lokesh Kumar, Chief General Manager, Export-Import Bank of India, among others.
