India's skill hub goes global with ILO pact

MoU between ILO and NSDC will help build a pool of Indian youth for global opportunities as the partnership aims to align and benchmark Indian qualifications with global skills standards.

The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) have joined forces in a landmark collaboration aimed at advancing skill development and lifelong learning, both within India and on a global scale.

The strategic partnership, announced Tuesday, seeks to empower individuals worldwide by equipping them with essential competencies and qualifications, thereby enhancing employability and fostering sustainable economic growth.

Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed by Ved Mani Tiwari, CEO of NSDC, and Sangheon Lee, Director of ILO's Employment Policy, a key initiative will be the implementation of the Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH).

This digital transformation aims to streamline skill development initiatives, making them more efficient, accessible, and impactful globally.

Through SIDH, workers’ and employers’ organizations in ILO member countries will have the opportunity to digitize systems, processes, skills delivery, and job matching, all based on a cost-effective model.

By leveraging ILO's expertise and MSDE's commitment to skilling, reskilling, and upskilling, the collaboration aims to empower individuals to navigate disruptions and create a sustainable future.

Moreover, the partnership seeks to facilitate public-private partnerships and knowledge exchange to enhance Sector Skill Councils, develop micro-credentials, and promote Recognition of Prior Learning through a global knowledge-sharing platform.

Ved Mani Tiwari emphasized that the MoU between ILO and NSDC will foster a pool of Indian youth for global opportunities, aligning and benchmarking Indian qualifications with global skills standards.

Furthermore, the potential of combining NSDC's technological capacity with ILO's standard-setting functions, tripartism, and global reach will significantly enhance training access and quality worldwide.

Quality apprenticeships, work-based learning for employability and productivity, and the development of sustainable enterprises will be central to this collaboration.

The partnership reflects a concerted effort to bridge skill gaps, promote global mobility for Indian workers, and facilitate their participation in remotely delivered knowledge work for the global market.
