The Mahakumbh festival in Prayagraj is projected to generate business worth over ₹3 lakh crore through goods and services, marking one of the largest economic events in India, according to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT).
"Mahakumbh, which happens after 144 years, is being held in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26, witnessing the arrivals of millions of devotees over these six weeks," said Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General of CAIT and Chandni Chowk MP.
Khandelwal asserted that this colossal human congregation displays the interplay between 'faith and the economy'.
The festival has stimulated local trade, particularly in Mahakumbh-themed merchandise, including diaries, calendars, jute bags, and stationery. Enhanced branding efforts have further propelled sales.
Initially, the CAIT had estimated business transactions worth ₹2 lakh crore with an anticipated footfall of 40 crore people.
However, Khandelwal noted, "Due to the unprecedented enthusiasm across the country, it is now expected that nearly 60 crore people will participate in the Mahakumbh by February 26, leading to a massive business turnover exceeding ₹3 lakh crore."
This surge has provided a substantial boost to Uttar Pradesh's economy and opened new avenues for business, he added.

The economic impact of the Mahakumbh spans various sectors, including hospitality and accommodation, food and beverage, transport and logistics, religious attire, puja samagri, handicrafts, textiles, apparel, healthcare, and wellness services.
Other areas such as media, advertising, entertainment, civic services, and advanced technology, including CCTV surveillance and AI-based systems, have also experienced heightened activity.
Khandelwal highlighted that the economic benefits extend beyond Prayagraj, with towns within a 150 km radius experiencing significant business growth.
Additionally, pilgrimage destinations such as Ayodhya and Varanasi have reported increased visits, as devotees travel to pay homage to Lord Ram and Lord Shiva. This has further amplified economic activities in surrounding regions.
The Uttar Pradesh government has invested ₹7500 crore to enhance Prayagraj's infrastructure, including the construction of flyovers, roads, and underpasses. Of this, ₹1500 crore was allocated specifically for Mahakumbh arrangements.
Khandelwal remarked that the festival's economic influence is poised to shape India's trade, commerce, and cultural narrative for years to come.
