The price of tomatoes has skyrocketed in the national capital, with rates surging to Rs 90 per kg as monsoon rains disrupt supplies.
This spike in tomato prices, along with significant increases in the cost of onions and potatoes, has led to a 10% year-on-year rise in the cost of a home-cooked vegetarian thali, according to a report by Crisil.
In Delhi's major wholesale vegetable markets, including Azadpur mandi, Ghazipur mandi, and Okhla sabzi mandi, tomato prices have soared. Just a few days ago, tomatoes were selling for Rs 28 per kg.
Now, prices have escalated to Rs 90 per kg in local markets and online, while wholesale rates have surged to as much as Rs 50 per kg.
The supply of tomatoes has significantly decreased over the past week. The number of trucks transporting tomatoes from key states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Himachal Pradesh has dwindled due to heavy rains impacting transportation.
A vendor in Ghazipur mandi reported that tomato prices have jumped from Rs 30-35 per kg to Rs 60-70 per kg. Similarly, a vendor in Okhla mandi attributed the price hike to crop damage caused by the rains, noting that tomatoes have a short shelf life and tend to rot quickly, further straining supplies.
The increased prices of essential vegetables are hitting consumers hard, with onions and potatoes also seeing price hikes of 46% and 59%, respectively.
