In response to the escalating demographic shift towards an aging population in India, NITI Aayog has issued a compelling call for sweeping reforms across various sectors to bolster elderly care.
The initiative, unveiled through a position paper titled “Senior Care Reforms in India: Reimagining the Senior Care Paradigm,” highlights the critical need to address the challenges posed by an increasing number of older citizens.
With projections indicating a significant rise in India’s elderly population from the current 10% to a staggering 19.5% by 2050, NITI Aayog’s recommendations aim to establish a robust support system tailored to the evolving needs of seniors.
This includes advocating for tax and legal reforms, as well as revitalizing the housing sector to accommodate the unique requirements of older individuals.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the Aayog emphasized the imperative of overhauling the senior care landscape to ensure the welfare and dignity of elderly citizens.
During the unveiling ceremony of the position paper on February 16, 2024, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery, alongside esteemed dignitaries such as Member (Health) Vinod K. Paul and CEO B. V. R. Subrahmanyam, stressed the importance of addressing the multifaceted needs of the elderly population.
The position paper outlined strategic interventions spanning health, social, economic/financial, and digital domains, designed to comprehensively address the evolving requirements of seniors.
Notably, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery underscored the pivotal role of technology and Artificial Intelligence in redefining senior care practices, aligning with India’s vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
