Punjab's Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema unveiled the budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, totaling a staggering Rs 2,04,918 crore. Titled as a blueprint for progress, the budget emphasizes transformative initiatives in education and healthcare sectors while addressing critical financial challenges faced by the state.
The budget presentation, devoid of new tax announcements, outlined a strategic plan to foster growth and development across various sectors. Notably, the proposal includes groundbreaking concepts like 'schools of brilliance' and 'schools of happiness', aiming to revolutionize the educational landscape in Punjab.
While presenting the budget in the state assembly under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann from the AAP (Aam Aadmi Party), Cheema noted that the government had generated over 40,000 jobs in the past two years.
Key highlights of the budget include:
1. Revenue deficit of Rs 23,198 crore and an effective outstanding debt amounting to Rs 3,53,599 crore.
2. Punjab's growth rate recorded at 9.41%, with GSDP reaching Rs 7,36,423 crore.
3. Significant allocations include Rs 13,784 crore for agriculture and allied sectors.
4. Provision of Rs 7,780 crore for 300 units of free power to residents; continuation of welfare initiatives.
5. Education sector earmarked Rs 16,987 crore, with plans to establish 'Schools of Brilliance' and 'Schools of Happiness'.
6. Introduction of 'Mission Samarth' for skill development in primary schools.
7. A provision of Rs. 9330 crore has been made for free electricity to farmers.
8. Sports sector allocated Rs 272 crore, with plans for sports nurseries and establishment of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University.
9. Healthcare services allocated Rs 5,264 crore, with provisions for Aam Aadmi Clinics.
