Sikkim has topped the charts for Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure (MPCE) in both rural and urban areas for the fiscal year 2023-24, showcasing its remarkable economic trajectory.
According to the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey by the Union Ministry of Statistics, Sikkim’s rural MPCE reached ₹9,474, while its urban counterpart stood at ₹13,965.
As detailed in a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, these figures are significantly higher than the national averages of ₹4,122 for rural areas and ₹6,996 for urban areas.
Even after factoring in imputed values of welfare benefits, the national averages only marginally improve to ₹4,247 for rural and ₹7,078 for urban areas, still trailing far behind Sikkim’s exceptional metrics.
Notably, Sikkim’s MPCE also holds up against India’s top 5% income group, whose average MPCE stands at ₹10,137 for rural and ₹20,310 for urban populations.
Analysts credit this success to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang’s governance, which has prioritised free healthcare, education, and welfare schemes.
The state’s commitment to inclusive growth is evident, with experts attributing its economic resilience to robust planning and people-centric policies.
The report underscores Sikkim’s ascendancy as a model of economic efficiency and effective governance, reinforcing its position as a progressive and prosperous state.
